As the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) celebrates its 30th Foundation Day, it is prepared for a transformative future with ambitious reforms, aiming to reshape the landscape of higher education in India. Under its ‘NAAC 30++’ agenda, the organization is set to redefine the quality assurance landscape and expand its efforts into new areas.
A New Milestone: Reforms and Future Directions
NAAC’s upcoming initiatives focus on two major themes: implementing proposed reforms and expanding its role in the higher education ecosystem. As Ganesan Kannabiran, Director of NAAC, stated, “The core areas include effective implementation of proposed reforms through a ‘light but tight’ accreditation methodology to assure a threshold level of quality at the national level. We are also ready to launch binary accreditation in the next few months.”
In the coming years, NAAC aims to enhance its accreditation processes and use a maturity-based framework to guide institutions toward international standards. This effort will ensure that educational institutions not only meet but exceed national quality benchmarks.
Expanding Horizons: NAAC’s Social Responsibility Initiatives
A notable aspect of NAAC’s new strategy is its commitment to social responsibility. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot announced that NAAC will venture into volunteering and skilling initiatives under the ‘NAAC Social Responsibility Cluster’ (NSRC). This initiative will connect underprivileged students with opportunities in IT and other leading sectors, enhancing their exposure and career prospects.
“NAAC will act as a catalyst and help build a network of schools and HEIs so that schools can utilise the facilities in the HEIs,” said Prof. Ganesan Kannabiran, the esteemed Director at the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. The program will start in Bengaluru and gradually extend across the country, collaborating with institutions such as Bangalore University, National Law School of India University, and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar School of Economics University. The focus will be on academic support, skill development, and fostering entrepreneurship among students.
Investing in Research: Enhancing Higher Education Quality
As part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations, NAAC is also launching a research centre dedicated to improving the quality of higher education. The council plans to allocate Rs 2 crore for research projects over the next two years. “We will invite proposals on a competitive basis, allocate research projects on emerging themes of higher education, and gain inputs for higher education policymaking,” explained Mr. Anil D. Sahasrabudhe, Executive Committee Chairman.
The research will focus on emerging trends and the quality of education, with data from NAAC’s extensive records playing a crucial role in shaping future policies. “With the analysed data, we can suggest required interventions in the higher education system to the government and regulatory bodies,” Sahasrabudhe added.
A Global Perspective: Accreditation Goes International
In a significant development, NAAC plans to extend its accreditation services beyond Indian borders. The council will begin accrediting international yoga courses, reflecting the global recognition of Indian traditions. This initiative aims to enhance the international standing of yoga programs and integrate Indian values into global educational practices.
A Vision for the Future
As NAAC celebrates 30 years of dedication to quality education, its forward-looking initiatives promise to drive substantial improvements across the higher education sector. From implementing cutting-edge reforms and expanding social responsibility to investing in research and international accreditation, NAAC is set to lead the way in advancing educational standards and fostering a more inclusive and dynamic learning environment.
The journey of NAAC is a testament to its commitment to excellence and innovation in higher education. As it steps into a new era, the focus on quality, inclusivity, and global recognition will undoubtedly shape the future of education in India and beyond.
