UGC, AICTE and Dept of Higher Education Start Digital University Process

With the education industry going digital, Indian Universities and colleges are making every possible effort to keep up with the change. Hence, the University Grants Commission (UGC), the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the Department of Higher Education have already kickstarted the process of establishing a Digital University in India. The idea of an efficient Digital University and setting up one in the country was first introduced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2022-23.

Aim of Digital University

The goal is to help students get instant access to a personalised learning experience and quality education that aligns with global standards. According to the government, a Digital University will be established as per a ‘network hub-spoke model’ supported by cutting-edge ICT expertise used for hub building. The university will be available in multiple languages and ICT formats to make it accessible to more students. It is expected that the top universities and colleges of India will take an active part in it and collaborate to create a network of hub-spokes for Digital University.

Key Features

  • No Limited Seats
Digital University will not restrict the number of seats available for students for each course or education program. It will address the issue of the lack of seats for higher education.
  • Widely Accessible Higher Education
It will allow all the students in India, irrespective of their location or language, to easily access remote learning, quality education, and a personalised learning experience.
  • Faculty Development and More Opportunities
The university will bridge the gap we often see in enrollment in SEDGs, faculty development, employability skills, and more.
  • Phy-igital
With the perfect mix of virtual and physical modes of education, Digital University will be a great step toward an immersive and experiential learning experience.
  • No Job Losses for Teachers
To align education with industry demands, the digital universities will focus on the trends on how hiring is taking place across the industries and provide the opportunity to customise and personalise education for the students. Additionally, the establishment of physical colleges and universities will continue to happen to result in no loss of employment for teachers.
  • Digital University Brings Collaboration with EdTech Platforms
With the aim of using technology while delivering quality education, the digital universities will be able to utilise facilities offered by ed-tech platforms. Furthermore, they will be able to make use of tech facilities available in ed-tech platforms for animation, visual effects, gaming, etc. to create high-quality content and enable students to be outstanding in learning while contributing to the growth of our country.

Although the proposal for Digital University was made recently, UGC, AICTE, and Dept. of Higher Education have already begun their efforts to establish it. With the assistance of other stakeholders, they have started the basic work required to set up the university in India. The process is designed and initiated with the aim to start the Digital University earlier than anticipated. All the information and updates regarding this were shared in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Education, Dr Rajkumar Ranajan Singh.
